3rd & 4th Year Expansion

IUSM Evansville now offers all four years of medical training. 3rd and 4th year clerkships are now being scheduled at four hospitals in the Evansville Tri-State area:

  • Deaconess Hospital, Evansville, IN
  • St. Mary's Hospital, Evansville, IN
  • Jasper Memorial, Jasper, IN
  • Southwestern Indiana Behavioral Health, Evansville, IN
  • Good Samaritan Hospital, Vincennes, IN

What happens in each? Some examples: 

  • Anesthesia:  Introduction to the basics of Anesthesia, learn airway management and vascular access techniques, perform bag-mask ventilations
  • Surgery:  Inpatient and Outpatient surgical experience.  Students will be exposed to common surgical problems and diagnoses and engage in preoperative, perioperative and surgical management of patients.  Students will have exposure to a wide range of surgical problems and procedures
  • Surgery Sub-Specialties: You may choose among the following specialties – Cardiothoracic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Trauma, Urology and Vascular – at this Center.  For those of you interested in ENT, Plastic/Reconstructive and Transplant we can arrange clerkships for you in Indianapolis or other centers
  • Pediatrics: Inpatient and outpatient experience with general pediatrician and pediatric specialists
  • Family Medicine: Exposure to ambulatory community based medicine and the specialty of Family Medicine in a Family Medicine Residency or AHEC setting

 

Things To Know: 

  • Travel/Lodging for the Four Intersession Sessions will be paid for by the Evansville Center
  • Travel to and from Jasper for Jasper clerkships will be paid for by the Center BUT will you be expected to stay at The Lodge for housing - we will not pay for a daily commute to and from Evansville.
  • If you have to go off-site for a clerkship (up to Indianapolis or to another Regional Center) we will pay for travel and lodging for that clerkship period. HOWEVER if you elect to go to another site (we have it but you want to take it elsewhere) we will NOT pay for travel and lodging
  • Meals will be provided at the Jasper site while on duty
  • A minimum of 2 meals a day with be provided for the Family Medicine rotation at Deaconess
  • LAPTOPS: These are the key means for doing course work and accessing lectures and other materials.  Personal laptops are available for loan from the Evansville Center for polycoms and testing.
  • SMARTPHONES: These are used to log procedures and activities. Is yours compatible with the IUSM system? Now is the time to find out. Go to the Medical Student Affairs Technology section on the IUSM website
  • Health Requirements: You need to do an annual PPD, FIT testing, provide a copy of your health immunizations if going elsewhere 
  • Training: Need to do annual Universal Precautions training on OnCourse.  Print out a copy of your certification and keep it for your records
